Mel!!!!Mel!!!! That was her name and the same that brought her back to reality. She could hear the tam tam sound of slippers, and surely she knew she was coming, her aunt, the very same person who had driven her to another land of thoughts . Before she could think of an answer for her name, her aunt gives her the slap of the year..

“Mel everyone is set for dinner except you” her aunt said to her with a high degree of conspicuous disgust,

“well I don’t care if you are hungry or not, you just have to stay alive, I really need you”. Her aunt stared into her eyes with a pinch of care,

Mel looked down on the tiled floor to avoid having direct eye contact with her aunt and noticed the cracks and black patches on a particular block of tile for the first time and wondered the wonders one could see if only one was a little more observant. Mel still with her head bent followed her aunt sheepishly to the dinning room, almost everyone was done eating.

Dinner was her best, but unfortunately she was not hungry, she just stared at the plate of fried fish and jollof rice then looked up and down. She suddenly noticed a familiar scared legs,  the legs were strange and so was everything around her, for sure she wanted out.

Those were Enny’s legs, they used be very straight and beautiful until life had happened.

It was on a cool evening, aunty Jane had brought June home for Enny, but it was her first time. She had screamed in pain and hit him with her flower vase close to the bed. That day,Aunty Jane had gotten so furious that she went back to the kitchen where Enny ran out from and brought the pot of water on fire, she had wanted to use to make Eba for everyone, the pain of the very hot water on Enny’s body was quite excruciating her screams rang again in my ears, most times when I’m alone, I can still hear the screams.

“I’m getting out” Mel muttered to herself softly, then gradually it became her scream, Enny rushed to call aunty Jane who came running with a syringe. Mel was still moments later after aunty Jane administered the injection.

That night everyone was surprised when they heard sobs coming from Mel’s room, they wondered how she could have been up and crying but no one dared open the door to check, maybe that was a good thing , they would have been more shocked,if they knew it was aunty Jane.

The next morning, Mel was fine a bit, at least she had not woken upscreaming. She had just woken up from a sweet dream of what likely looks like her future only to wake up to a night mare.

June was in the other room, he seemed to take a liking to her and Enny, the very pretty ones among the girls. June stared deeply at Mel, as he was already undressed waiting for Mel to wake up., Melturned to the left wing of her room where the bathroom is and stood up to have her bath and June followed her

,”you would at least let me have my bath first, right?”She asked him in a low voice.

June quickly backs out and rushed back to the bed, giggling like a child who is expectant, he waits, counting from hundred backwards.

As the water hits her, she finds herself thinking again, this time deeper and harder and couldn’t take stock of all she was seeing and this time didn’t even notice the cracks on the slimy wall, the half broken mirror still on the wall, the green and black spots on the bathtub.

Mel! Her name  brings her back to reality, how indebted she must be to reality, she thought to herself. She comes out of the bathroom and June is already all over her, she is disgusted but maintains her cool until June says “you didn’t even  have a bath”,

“she didn’t even let me have breakfast before you” she responded to him. Mel knew she was full of hate, knew she needed help, but help would come from the outside world, and she knew she would never get out. June was about stepping out in anger when she called him back. She knew she was not ready for candle love.

Two nights before, Mel had rejected a client and aunt Jane had scared her back with candle wax burns, that she termed candle love, her new innovation. She let June have his way, as he thrust in and out, she laid still crying, out of pains she felt in her heart.

How her world had changed suddenly, how she left being her dad’s princess to a sex slave, a piece of pawn on the chess board, tossed all around to protect the King. She wondered what in the world she had done to fate.

She cried painfully and didn’t stop, until she felt drops on her chest, yes June was crying too and painfully as well.
