CHANGE by Pam Rwang

CHANGE
Once upon a time, there lived a world of peace, love and progress. Long long time ago.
It’s all gone now.
To be honest with y’all, I too really can’t phantom how, but to the best of my knowledge, I know for a fact that we lost ourselves, both individually and collectively as a nation, trashing out our core fundamental principles, ethics and values into the running oceans.
Rather, we choose to pick up rotten ideologies that will only govern us into an abyss of tragedy. It’s disheartening to realize that we are deceived by the illusion that our very strengths are our weaknesses.
I grew up to learn about the stories of great individuals, the likes of Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King Jr., Abraham Lincoln and many others who stood up to fight in pursuit for a cause which they prevailed . These men understood the basics about humanity, that our lives aren’t fully lived if we do not fight for who we love and what we believe in and history remembers them for that.
But where are such men now?
Diversity in its actual sense is beautiful, just like the rainbow in it’s great diversity of colors is beautiful. It’s the harmony it comes with that opens our eyes to see such beauty. So then, why hate ourselves cause of our diversity? Why condemn a person even before giving him an opportunity to speak cause of his locality?
The world is a busy jungle with lots of preys and predators promoting cannibalism where we feed on ourselves for our own selfish reasons. We have lost sight of growth, a wise man once said, ‘quenching a lit candle only makes the room darker’.
So why the hate?
Why do we feed on lies we are made to believe? That we can’t coexist peacefully regardless of our ethnicity, race or gender.
We keep blaming the government for their inefficiency for a change but, truth be told, the government only patronize our folly, ignorance and lack of will cause we the citizens aren’t ready to take the first step towards change, which is in ourselves. It’s my desire that we all take the step.
